For fans of Stephen King, Joe Hill, and Sarah Langan comes a thrilling new vision of American horror. In Heather Herrman’s heart-pounding debut novel, evil is ready to feed—and it’s got one hell of an appetite.
In the wake of tragedy, John and Erma Scott are heading west in search of a new life. So when car trouble strands them in sleepy Cavus, Montana, they decide to stay for a while, charmed by the friendly residents and the surrounding ambiance. Here, they hope, is the healing balm that their marriage needs.
Then John and Erma find themselves in a fight not just to save their marriage, but their very lives. For this is no ordinary town. Its quiet streets conceal a dark and bloody secret that has slumbered for centuries. Now, that secret is awake . . . and it’s hungry.
Like a slow infection, evil is spreading through Cavus. Soon John and Erma—along with the local sheriff, an undocumented immigrant, a traumatized teenage girl, and an old man with terrible secrets of his own—must join together to battle an all-consuming force that has set its sights on its prey the entire human race.
Advance praise for Consumption
“Both the evil that suffuses the pages of Consumption and the motley gang of innocents who defend against it are much more interesting than those usually found in your average scare fare. Solid writing elevates this imaginative fright-fest from an invigorating new voice.”—Sophie Littlefield, bestselling author of the Aftertime series
Consumption eBook Heather Herrman
Since my retirement, I have been relying on Amazon's free Kindle app & free Kindle books to satisfy my voracious reading appetite. Having been hooked for years on such "super-star" authors as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Bentley Little, Ruth Rendell, Jeffrey Deaver, Joyce Carol Oates & others, & having spent countless dollars on their books, I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the free Kindle books I have read. Consumption was a free-one-day-only Kindle book and one of the best books I have read in this genre. There is a brief prologue involving a violent incident that seems unrelated to the story, but which later explains the core of the novel. The basic story begins with a couple and their dog whose car breaks down in Cavus, Montana, in the middle of their cross-country move. They are rescued by a local Sheriff, who goes above and beyond by offering them a place to stay overnight with his aunt and a deal on getting their car repaired. They have arrived on the eve of Cavus's annual Black Squirrel Festival, the highlight of the year in this small, tight-knit town. This couple's marriage is troubled, with each party concealing secrets from the other and each having different plans for the relationship. Gradually, other characters are introduced and their backgrounds carefully developed so that you feel you know them. The dialogue is well-crafted and realistic. There are flash-back sections involving the town's disturbing history. I don't want to give any spoilers away - I myself could not tell at the beginning exactly where the story would go and totally enjoyed the ride getting there. There is absolutely something dark and horrible happening in Cavus, but whether it's the town itself, the people in general, one specific person or something else is the question - the answer and the ending of the book are both surprising and totally satisfying. This was definitely a "one more chapter, one more chapter" type of book. As a side note, I saw in one of the publisher's reviews that a lot of people think women can't write horror as well as men, and I have to admit I sort of had this same opinion since most of the authors in this genre are men. However, this book stands with the best of Stephen King and others as far as realistic characters, good dialogue and that creeping sense of dread that the best books hook you with. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Heather Herman's books.Product details

Consumption eBook Heather Herrman Reviews
Stop and read this book! Like great horror does it begins by reeling you in to the day to day lives of a young couple who are moving cross country in search of a new beginning. But the scenic Montana landscape will not just be passed on by. Herrman weaves a unique horror story by utilizing the American landscape and strong, diverse characters. This book will stay with you long after you have finished it.
This novel just fell into my iPad as honestly, I was searching Stephen king novels and this popped up as a foot liner. I clicked it and took a chance based only on the description and boy I’m glad I did! This novel comes at you straightforward but keeps you in suspense as you follow the characters, all the while knowing that something is very off here(in the town and amongst the people in the book). I won’t ruin anything but I will say that if you take the chance I did with this novel I feel as if you won’t be staring at regret but delight in the risk you took purchasing this novel!
Bravo Heather Herrman! What a fine, scary, haunting novel. Fine example of a poisoned landscape/poisoned social mores entwinement. The writing was extremely good. Pacing is fast, with a lot of scares happening so rapidly there isn't much buildup, but I'm ok with that. King in his many novels has gone back and forth between "in your face" and the "sloooow buildup" approach so much that I'm good with however an author wants to approach their reveals.
Really great book if you like haunted landscaped, cursed town type genre books with good character development and some protagonists you can really feel for. Waiting for Ms Herrman's next book (s) with anticipation.
This was a very engaging read! I was hooked from the beginning. The character development was great. I felt as if I were meeting these people in person. It is a true gift to be able to manage the right amount of beautiful description and maintain a climactic pace. Ms. Herrman does this well. As other reviewers have said, this is gory so if that bothers you look elsewhere. As for me, this author is now on my must read list so I can't wait to see what she'll do next.
This was a journey of a different kind, and certainly, one like I've never read before. A good thing I believe.
First off, this is a complete story, not a teaser. Hooray for that!
There was some graphic sexual detail that I believe could have been left out without causing any damage to the story at all, but that's just my opinion. The Author must have felt it added something that I obviously missed. )
The tale was well written, and the main characters well defined. I think the Author showed great imagination in the plot of the story, and it definitely held my interest from beginning to end.
i love my graphic horror and i found this one to deliver......getting stranded in this town was the worst fate to happen and as far as characters go, i found myself getting close to this one and that one and i had to keep switching because they all go through their own personal HADES!!! if you like your horror graphic, you should LOVE this one!!!
This is a riveting story and yes you want to read all of it at once. Hard to put down! The characters are so fulfilling..they give the story so much strength. It makes you question all the big businesses you see startling up and finally leaving the town's and people they use and spit out, moving to other locations onto to do the deeds again. Are they tell future ..like they promise, or are they the evil we have been warned about. Read on...I RECOMMEND and DARE YOU.
